Northern Arizona in Winter

Snowshoeing adventures from Elden Trails B&B

Northern Arizona in Winter
The weather was so mild we did not even need light jackets. A good amount of snow on the mountains north side and cooler & cloudy conditions for the next week or so back country snow outings should be a lot of fun. But as always be p0repared when you venture out. Take water, food, extra clothing and know the layout of...

Snowshoeing into Little Elden Springs

Still lots of snow despite warmer days

Snowshoeing into Little Elden Springs
Snowshoeing up to Little Elden Springs. Despite the relatively warm conditions of late the snow was deep all along the north side of Little Elden. This is a beautiful spot anytime of year. This is a great hike accessed by Little Elden Springs road off Highway 89.

Winter fun in northern Arizona can still get your kicks on route 66

Winter fun in northern Arizona
Marnie in the woods behind ET. Unfortunately it has now turned so much milde4 that much of the snow has melted. Today its wet with rain off & on.At the higher elevations there is still plenty of snow though. Great skiing, sledding or snowshoeing conditions still prevail.

Snowshoeing around Mt. Elden

Winter adventures in Flagstaff

Snowshoeing around Mt. Elden
Today Chuck & I ventured out a bit further and ascended a large hill on the north end of Mt. Elden. The snowshoe trek covered about 4 miles including the ascent of the 30 degree hill and a steep gully just to the north of the hill. Deep untrammeled snow (except for deer & Elk prints) filled the gully. and made for a most...

Aftermath of the Flagstaff Snowstorm

Clearing roofs is a good idea

Aftermath of the Flagstaff Snowstorm
So much snow fell that we thought it a good idea to shovel off the roof. Ice dams on roofs can be a problem after big snowfalls. We only shoveled the north facing side as the south side has good sun exposure. In addition we have heat tape along the edge of the roof and in the gutters.

It's Wintertime in Flagstaff

Come on up for some fun in the snow

It's Wintertime in Flagstaff
Here's a look at the ET mailbox and front yard. Today the sun is shinning brightly. The temperature is still well below freezing but the power of the sun is melting the ice & snow on the road. Turns out this series of storms dumped the 10th largest amount of snow since records have been the late 1800's. The...

Big Snow Storms in Flagstaff

Over 22 inches of snow

Big Snow Storms in Flagstaff
Well, we finally had the big one, or rather a series of three storms that have dropped over 22 inches of snow here at Elden Trails B&B. A lot of shoveling this past few days! Now it seems we are in for a bit of a chill. The next few days will see overnight lows way down in the single digits with daytime highs not...

Hiking on Mt. Elden

Lesser known Flagstaff Trails

Hiking on Mt. Elden
In this photo my friend Chuck & his dog Mac are standing inside a gully on the east face of Mt. Elden. The terrain behind them actually rises rather steeply and they are facing downhill. This is on a route not well traveled and known mostly to a few locals.

Sledding Fun in Flagstaff

After the storm

Sledding Fun in Flagstaff
After the Christmas eve snowstorm good sledding conditions prevailed. This photo was taken just a short way behind Elden Trails Bed and Breakfast. The popular large sledding areas in and around Flagstaff were swamped with people eager to have fun in the snow. Flagstaff has one new snow play are this year, the FT....

Big Storm in Flagstaff

Snow on the way

Big Storm in Flagstaff
This old snag stood next to the trail for many years and provided a home for a number of birds. During the big storm it finally gave it up and thundered to the ground right across the trail. With an impending snowstorm it may take awhile but eventually the forest service will cut open the path again. The forecast is...

What Our Guests Are Saying

  • "Great examples and advocates for sustainable living. This cute studio bed and breakfast provided the quiet night that we needed, unique touches everywhere. Would have enjoyed softer sheets but over all comfortable experience. Owners were great hosts as the left a key and warmed the studio since we were late arrivals. The property backs up to a national forest for our beloved four-legged friends to run free. The most mention-able part of our experience was the breakfast. It was healthy, wholesome and organic. We ate eggs laid that morning from the chickens right outside the studio."

  • "We spent a quiet night in the private suite at Elden Trails. It is attractively decorated (not frou-frou) and comfortable. Our host delivered fresh coffee at our requested time first thing in the morning. The breakfast was delicious, all made from scratch. The fresh egg layers live on site. Out the back gate we had a snowy walk in the woods at the base of Mt. Elden."

  • "Steve and Marney were wonderful hosts and our room was cosy and comfortable. Breakfast was special with everything organic and home made. Walks and wildlife were just out the window and back gate. It was great talking with Steve and Marney over breakfast, they were genuine and engaging hosts. I would recommend this B&B."

  • "We had a splendid one night stay at Elden Trails B&B. The studio suite is comfy and quiet with forest trails directly behind the suite with a variety of hiking options. Marnie and Steve are gracious hosts and helped us with dinner and entertainment options in Flagstaff. We can't say enough about how wonderful the breakfast was. We requested a vegan breakfast and it far exceeded our expectations. Plenty of variety and it was very tasty."

  • "Steve and Marnie are exceptional hosts; very solicitous and friendly. The breakfasts were amazing and healthy. The room is very comfortable and cozy with a separate bedroom, roomy living space and nice bathroom. There is a little frig, hot water pot and filtered water. A microwave would have made the room just perfect. Great place to stay!"

  • "This B&B is great! We loved the home like feel of the cottage. The attention to detail, the delightful patio, fabulous breakfast and the hospitality of our hosts make this Bed and Breakfast one we will return to each time we head West."

  • "Steve and Marnie are exceptional hosts in an industry (B&Bs) that has attracted too many people who are merely interested in revenues. It is obvious that they have captured the spirit of hospitality that guided B&B's previously. It shows in the lodgings, the food, and their level of helpfulness."

  • "We stayed for 2 nights and the experience was memorable. Steve and Marnie were exemplary. The place was spacious, elegant and comfortable. Our breakfast was amazing and should be experienced by everyone. Healthiest breakfast ever. The garden was spectacular and optimized. The best was the bonding with the whole family. Truly beautiful and authentic."

  • "Even though the weather was freezing and it was snowing the hospitality of Steve and Marnie made our stay warm and friendly. They went the extra mile to make sure our stay was comfortable and easy. The convenience to hiking trails was a nice surprise and the breakfasts....well, that's a reason to return all on its own. A big thank you for making our time in Flagstaff wonderful."

  • "A great experience in bed and breakfasting! The food is healthful and delicious. The ambiance reflects the good taste and congeniality of the innkeepers. Comfort and attention to detail are evident everywhere. Will we stay there again? Emphatically yes! We have already made reservations for our next stay in Flagstaff."

  • "I stayed here with my girlfriend and her sister last month. It couldn't have been better. Although its a few miles from town, it is right at the heart of great hiking trails. Its set back in a quiet neighborhood which was very nice. The room is very cute and clean. The food was the best part. Breakfast was hearty and healthy. The owners are very kind."

  • "I stayed 4 nights when on a recent personal retreat. The food was awesome and Marnie packed a breakfast for me for the day I left at 6am. The location was exactly what I was looking for - quiet, access to gorgeous trails and hosts that were most helpful with information. Looking forward to returning there again."

  • "This is our first full summer in AZ and we wanted to get out of the heat of Phoenix. Flagstaff fit the bill and Elden Trails made us glad we came. The innkeepers are very interesting and friendly and the breakfast is delicious. Great hiking and fun historic downtown area."

  • "I stayed at Elden Trails in September 2013 for three nights before joining a Grand Canyon hiking tour. It was a beautiful spot, with great access to hiking trails and very close to downtown Flagstaff. The cabin is spacious, comfortable, and very quiet. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and I really enjoyed the company & conversation each morning. Thanks Steve & Marnie for being great hosts!"
